The Team & History

TRAIL JOURNEYS NELSON are proud to offer the same quality services established by Central Otago, and are centrally positioned to offer Day adventures from depots in Nelson, Mapua and Kaiteriteri.

Both with young families, Andrew Schwass and Sean Doherty continue the passion of professional service and values that make Trail Journeys industry leaders.

Andrew an experienced local came from a cricketing background and is passionate about the Region. Andrew and his wife Sherie have two daughters. Sean and his wife Deb arrived in New Zealand ten years ago from the UK and have a huge passion for the outdoor New Zealand lifestyle and have two sons.

Trail Journeys New Zealand was founded by long-time friends and Central Otago residents, Neville Grubb and Ritchie Bailey.

From humble beginnings in 2004, the company expanded vigorously to 200 hire bikes, three 21 seater buses, three mini vans and three shuttle trailers. In 2007 Ritchie retired, and Neville took up the role of Managing Director and the business’s marketing and development.

In 2011 Andrew Schwass had the vision of Bringing Trail Journeys to Nelson. He approached friend and fellow ex cricketer, Shayne O’Conner (Manager of the Central operation) with the idea and presented it to the Board.

In 2012 the Mapua Ferry service was purchased for taking passengers and their bikes from Mapua to Rabbit Island. Based on the Mapua Wharf Trail Journeys Nelson had their first year of operation in 2014/15, hiring out bikes for people wanting to explore the trails on Rabbit Island. They now offer rental services in Kaiteriteri where the Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park is very popular and Nelson where you can enjoy the city trails or the Trail towards Mapua and Wakefield.

The next section of the Great Taste Trail from Wakefield to Tapawera gets underway in spring 2017. The 175km loop Trail is due for completion between 2017-2019

The Team

Andrew Schwass

Andrew a qualified joiner and former cricketer had the idea of starting Trail Journeys in Nelson and approached the team down in Central Otago. The rest is history and Andrew now manages the daily operations with Sean from the Mapua Base.

Sean Doherty

After moving from the UK in 2004 Sean has a military background and has found his feet in Nelson with partnering Andrew in the operation. With a young family Sean offers skills that complement the values of the business.

Glen Lovelock

Glen is Andrew’s mother, and is the force behind the scenes. In charge of organising the tours, Glen will be your first point of contact through the website.

Geoff Lovelock

Geoff is our guru with book keeping and is also one of Trail Journeys qualified drivers. Both Geoff & Glen have poured hours into setting up the Nelson operation which has been massive and appreciated.

Clive Donnison

Also from the UK originally, Clive is just one of those all round good buggers! The second best skipper on the Mapua Ferry Clive has a great sense of humour and is a lot of fun to have around.
